why does one write a complex novel, something that meanders between the abstract and the abstruse. is it writing a piece that is esoteric- and can be understood by him and a few chosen he chooses to explain it to- just for the sake of being esoteric? faulkner did it, woolf did it, henry james did it without knowing he did it. is it the struggle of a writer trying to break the shackles of his own mind by writing something that he feels true towards? faulkner said that he wrote "the sound and the fury"the way he did so that readers could feel and not just read what his characters felt.
